Dear Fellow Delegates and Honorable Chairs
Comments and constructive feedback will be most greatly appreciated.
Question of: Piracy is an international problem and should be tackled through a co-coordinated, international response, led by the United nations and not by individual nations.
Delegation/submitter: China
Submitted to: Political Affairs
Resolution
Strongly recognizing the fact that Piracy is a growing international problem.
Reaffirming the centrally important nature of the right to travel and trade freely without fear of attack or theft.
Deeply disturbed that we are not going into depth on the root causes of piracy.
Concerned that the proposed resolution may lead to further violence, and as representatives of the UN we need to search for peaceful resolutions.
Stressing that the root problem is actually poverty.
Keeping in mind that individual nations should have the right to make their own decisions as regards their own national interests.
Noting the current presence of foreign military in the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) is proving to be effective.
We strongly urge the UN to put in place measures to combat poverty as that is the basis of the piracy problem.
1. To introduce fishing quotas to prevent mass=fishing by industrial fishing boats.
2. To put in place education programs and training to enable the Somalian fishermen to access other ways of making a living.
Yours truly,
The representative for China
